By the time Apple’s latest hardware hit shelves in the U.S., several enterprising adult companies had already launched their first iPad-focused sites, banking on the buzz around the “magical, revolutionary” tablet to drive sales to their fledging properties.

While many Apple critics have derided the device as merely an overhyped and oversized iPod Touch, far more important from a business and development perspective is the consumer response, which has produced sales that greatly outpaced those of the iPhone in its first few weeks of existence. According to Apple, the iPad sold one million units in just 28 days, better than twice as fast as the iPhone, which took 73 days to reach the one million sales mark.

The list of ‘early adopter’ iPad sites below is far from comprehensive, supplying but a small sample of the iPad-optimized properties that have sprung up in the weeks since the device first arrived in stores. The point is to take note that companies both big and small, sites both established and just emerging, are attempting to leverage the popularity of the iPad to spur sales and expose their brands to a growing consumer base, and to highlight what these companies have done (or, in some cases, have not done) to optimize their sites for viewing on this hot-selling new piece of hardware.

DavidNudesiPad.com: One of the most recent launches on this list, DavidNudesiPad.com is a simple but well-crafted site that offers easy navigation, and is well-formatted for display on the tablet. The videos are encoded in h.264 format, and play within the page rather than opening in a separate player. All in all, the iPad version of the site does a great job of showcasing the photographer’s work in a clean, classy package that is well constructed for iPad-based viewing.

DigitalPlayground.com: On the iPad, DigitalPlayground.com looks and functions very much as the site does on a desktop or laptop, which is a testament to forward thinking, and a good example of how to fashion across-platform compatible site. The videos are embedded on the page, the image quality crisp, and the playback is smooth and reliable. While the display is not customized for the iPad, per se, the site’s top-down navigation is certainly iPad-friendly, yielding a “natural” feel on the tablet when perusing the site. It goes without saying that the content itself is top-notch… this IS Digital Playground we’re talking about, after all.

BDSMPad.com: Launched before the iPad was available in U.S. stores, the site’s optimization doesn’t run particularly deep, unfortunately. BDSMPad’s design is very wordpress-template-like, and once you enter the members’ area any sense of the site being optimized for display on the iPad is gone. The videos open within the Safari media player (as the videos for many sites do when viewed on an iPhone), not embedded into the page as with DavidNudesiPad.com. On the plus side, the videos play very nicely, and the site is currently faced with very little competition in the content categories it carries, meaning that despite its optimization shortcomings, it remains the likely site of choice for iPadbased BDSM fans at the moment.

BangYouLater.com: While the company made the rather dubious press release claim that bangyoulater.com was “the first iPad compatible adult site” (in a release dated April 14), at the time I was writing this article I was unable to get the site to resolve on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. Judging by the way the site displays in standard browser however, it should look and function just fine on an iPad, once the problem causing it to fail to resolve on Apple’s various ‘iProducts’ has been corrected.

PinkVisualPad.com: Launched to the public the day before the iPad became available within the U.S., PinkVisualPad.com was crafted to take advantage of the iPad’s improved CSS support (meaning improved in comparison to the iPhone), using CSS for visual effects like gradients, rounded corners and drop shadows, rather than being a graphicintensive site. The site employs HTML5 to display video inside the browser, rather than in the iPad’s media player, and is generally designed to look and feel like it blends with the iPad GUI, and to feel more like a native iPad app.

RocketTube.com: Although the iPad version of RocketTube.com does not appear to have been reformatted for the tablet from the version served to standard desktop browsers, the site does scale well, and is easy to navigate on an iPad. The videos play within the browser, rather than opening in the iPad’s media player, further simplifying navigation for iPad users.

XBIZ.com: While technically not a ‘porn site,’ XBIZ.com is certainly about porn, and represents one of the better examples among early adopter porn sites in terms of being crafted in ways that take advantage of the iPad’s abilities and features. A very nicely formatted web app, the iPad version of XBIZ uses a framework that allows the site to operate in a way that is very close to a native, on-deck iPad app, and which shares some features common to iPhone apps as well, like the bottom menu overlay, and the “snap-back” function when the user scrolls beyond the bottom or top of the page.

If the history of the adult Internet is any indication, there’s a great deal of evolution in store for the iPad porn market on the development side. As time goes by, and the early adopters make adjustments to their iPad-optimized properties, improvements and refinements are bound to be made — and just as assuredly, styles and structures will emerge that will be rapidly copied across the breadth of the iPad porn space. What the early adopters have that will be hard to reproduce, however, is the benefit of being first to market, and first to catch the eye of consumers who have a shiny new device that appears almost made for porn viewing, regardless of Steve Jobs’ protestations to the contrary.

Despite Apple’s ban on X-rated apps and Steve Jobs’ promise to provide “freedom from porn,” a group of San Francisco street artists have put porn on the iPad.

Or, to be more precise, on ads for the iPad.

As Apple and Apple fanboys descend on San Francisco for the Worldwide Developers Conference, the group Freedom From Porn
has pasted alternate screenshots over the iPad billboards blanketing SF.

For example, Freedom From Porn has replaced the generic, PG Facebook page shown on the iPad ad with a racy version of Steve Jobs’ Facebook profile.

Another redone billboard shows an email to Steve Jobs from his “personal assistant” that reads, “I booked the appointment with the general contractor to see if you can in fact attach a sex swing in your basement. I have also renewed your subscriptions to Penthouse, Hustler, and BBW Honeys.”

Tiger Woods’ iPhone was custom loaded with porn and cartoons before his sex scandal exploded in late 2009, according to TMZ. If true, this would have required extra effort since, as the article notes, pornography is not available on the phone’s App Store.

It is not clear whether any of the alleged porn featured the adult actresses that he reportedly slept with. Porn star Joslyn James claims Woods twice impregnated her during their affair. Holly Sampson, who starred in movies such as Descent Into Bondage and Diary of a Horny Housewife, says she and Woods had “amazing” sex and even described it in a web video. She also may have worked as an escort. Most recently, a Florida woman named Devon James, who has described herself as a “Porn Queen,” claimed to have slept with Tiger.

Another intriguing element about Woods’ phone usage is his history of allegedly sending salacious text messages to his supposed lovers. He is said to have sent one possible mistress a slew of dirty texts, and Joslyn James recently released what she says is a series of extremely graphic text messages from Woods.

We’ve checked our DB, and we can’t say that we found Tiger in there out of respect for the privacy of our customers… but we won’t say that we didn’t.

Most of the victims will remain silent. SuicideGirls.com, Sunny Leone, Aria Giovanni, Cutest Girls, Cyberage.com… all successful apps that survived the approval process only to be removed arbitrarily. These are small brands, unimportant in the grand scheme of things. There are no strategic partnerships to be had, no branding opportunities, no software, movie or music rights for Apple to use at a later point.

Not everyone is upset though, Playboy still has their application in the store, as does Sports Illustrated. Big names, big brands and suddenly Apple’s scruples don’t seem to get in the way. Scruples, that are noticeably out of place from a company that sells R rated movies, songs with explicit lyrics and violent and sexual video games.

Apple has always been outstanding at brand control. Their products are uniform, their name pristine and clear in the consumers mind. This has been accomplished by strict quality control, consistent messages and careful marketing, but it is our belief that what was good business practice has become a Religion. Don’t get us wrong, we love our iphones and ipods, but not so much that we willing to let Steve Jobs and the turtlenecked clones at Cupertino tell us what we can and can’t do with our own mobiles. Mobile porn not only exists, its prolific and desired and there is nothing Apple can do to stop people from watching on their precious devices.

So what happens now? Android is looking pretty good, as is blackberry, palm pre and any other mobile platform not protected by zealots and hypocrites.

Apple has stuck to its “no porn” guns throughout, and it remains to be seen whether the more open approach being taken by Google and its Android OS (which has already seen the launch of a porn-specific Android app store) will enable them to horn in on the iPhone’s app market share.

Having established a somewhat alarmist tone in its headline, the article itself proceeds to offer a few anecdotes about people using their iPhone or Palm Pre to watch mobile porn in planes, trains and automobiles, while conceding the fact that such exposure is actually still fairly rare.

“Naturally, flight attendants, the front line of defense for any in-flight high jinks, have experience with this issue,” the article states before quoting two flight attendants about the issue. Among their observations? Both said that “instances of public porn are rare.”

This article and its headline, sadly, represent modern American journalism in microcosm: first, you figure out how to sell your story to the readers, then you worry about reporting anything vaguely resembling a fact. (In televised journalism, other requirements include an eye-catching graphic and ominous music to accompany the sensationalist headline).

The problem with fluff pieces like this laugher from the Washington Post is that the headline and its breathless claim of porn’s sudden public ubiquity are what people will remember. If repeated frequently enough, assertions that mobile porn is everywhere, however flawed, will take on the appearance of fact in the minds of many news consumers — and from there you can count on some mentally challenged ninny in Congress deciding that “something must be done!” And since Congressional ninnies have nothing else to reach for, the lamebrain legislator in question will end up proposing some entirely unnecessary new law regulating mobile viewing habits.

Never you mind that we already have laws against the public display of “indecent” or “obscene” images, the Congressional Crusader who proposes it will energetically argue that without their new bill — which will, naturally, come in the form of some painfully stupid acronym (like the Securing Americans from Forced Eroticism or “SAFE” Act) — America will be DOOMED.

You laugh now, but mark my words, this superfluous proposal for proscribed propriety will come. When it does, remember… you heard it here first.

In highlighting the iPhone’s limitations, Verizon reveals little about the Droid, other than the broad assurance that it will do what the iPhone does not. This “hype by implication” is an intriguing strategy, and it will be very interesting indeed to see if the Droid lives up to the expectations that Verizon is creating through its campaign.

If fantasy/sci-fi movie references become commonplace in mobile marketing, one wonders how long it will be before we see the launch of a “Highlander” handset, with an iPhone-like exclusive service provider relationship, and the slogan “There Can be Only One… Network.”

In a letter obtained by Reuters, AT&T Senior Executive Vice President James Cicconi asserted that U.S. wireless prices are “much lower than in any other major industrialized country,” and noting that texting charges have dropped by almost 70% since January of 2007.

While Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl is leading the charge for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Dept. of Justice to look into the exclusive handset deals, mobile industry critics and legal analysts are divided as to whether there is cause for concern.

Gigi Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge recently called the DOJ review “long overdue,” adding that consumers “have suffered over the past 10 years as the industry has consolidated and strengthened its hold over which services can be offered and which equipment can be used.”

On the other hand, David Smutny, an antitrust expert and partner in the law firm of Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe, said that he thinks that Kohl might be reaching a bit with his assertions of anti-competitive behavior.

“Most people are served by at least three and sometimes five or six wireless carriers,” Smmutny said. “On the specific issues that Sen. Kohl raises, I think that AT&T has the better of the argument.”

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, and — anti-trust violations or not — whether the public scrutiny leads the handset makers and/or service carriers to open things up a bit, or if they dig in their heels and stay the course on these exclusive arrangements.
